GUEST SPEAKER
David Hymowitz is a licensed social worker with over 30 years of experience working in the human services field. He has held positions as an educator, program developer, clinician and support group leader for youth, adults and families, and in administrative and executive roles. David currently is the Director of #SameHere Schools and Community Programs. He has developed SEL Partnerships with numerous Long Island Schools, Libraries and Community Health Agencies. Programs include workshops for staff, parents and students, while assisting in the development and integration of wellness and social emotional learning into the climate of the school districts and organizations. He is a certified master trainer for FEMA’s Crisis Counseling Program and for the past 20 years he has served as an adjunct professor at both Hofstra University’s Health Professions and Family Studies Department where he teaches Mental Health and Chemical Dependency classes and SUNY at Stony Brook’s School of Social Welfare preparing graduate students to become Social Workers.David is an active community member of the Nassau County Heroin Task Force Committee and is a certified Narcan trainer.

Part 1: Living in a Digital World: Impact on Students and Schools
This interactive workshop examine how extensive social media and other online platforms have become for students from Pre-K to 12th grade. It will explore both the productive and benefits of the digital world as well as some of the potential dangers and problems.Specific areas of interest will include problems that exist online, like cyberbullying online challenges, social skills development and physiological issues, like, brain development and sleep disturbances. It will also, explore the impact that COVID has had on their usage and where schools have contributed and benefitted. It will also spend time examining the school’s role, leadership and next steps to assist students, staff and parents with living in a digital world.

Part 2: Addictive Behaviors This interconnected workshop will begin with an overview of the current drug trends among students and the larger community, focusing on the resurging opiate epidemic, the emerging usage of methamphetamines, as well as, other popular substances, and the potential impact of the legalization of marijuana in NYS. It will explore a slightly different perspective on why students self-medicate, including the possible connection to mental health issues and stress. This will be followed by an exploration of online gaming and the possible connection to problem gambling. It will also explore next steps for school districts and the community to prevent problems and intervene when they arise.
